Dear Friends of Our Kids in Care,


There is no planning when a child needs to be removed from a potentially dangerous living situation. Frequently, children arrive in foster placements with nothing but the clothes on their backs. If they are "lucky," they may have a black garbage bag with whatever the case worker who picked them up was able to grab on the way out the door. And the next morning, many of these kids have to go to school. With no sleep, no clean clothes and no backpacks... (click here to read attachment)

Check out this inspiring article about the contagious way that two foster parents in Massachusetts joined together with others in their communities to help meet the basic needs of kids placed into foster homes.

Can we find ways to follow their example to mobilize our communities to provide similar help?

Together let's begin donation drives to be able to provide backpacks with two outfits, pajamas, hygiene products, socks, underwear, and a toy/activity appropriate for a child aged 0-17 years old!

  • What congregation or organization can you invite to help collect these needed items? Ask people to donate baby/children's gently used or new clothing,diapers, backpacks, outerwear, new books, gift cards and any personal care items. Bring items to our upcoming FCC meetings. Or, drop off at our Faith Communities Coalition on Foster Care office at First Presbyterian Church, 1669 West Maple Rd., Birmingham, 48084.

Can you organize a packing party and invite helpers of all ages to create these emergency packets? How about inviting some friends or co-workers together to assemble these foster care bags? This is a great activity to do with younger children and, as many of us know, service activities for younger kids are few and far between. Please attach a small tag noting the age, gender and season. What a great project for church groups, scout groups, book clubs and families!

HOW COMMON IS PROSTATE CANCER?

Other than skin cancer, prostate cancer is the most common cancer in American men. The American Cancer Society’s estimates for prostate cancer in the United States for 2017 are:

  • About 161,360 new cases of prostate cancer

  • About 26,730 deaths from prostate cancer

RISK OF PROSTATE CANCER

About 1 man in 7 will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during his lifetime.

Prostate cancer develops mainly in older men. About 6 cases in 10 are diagnosed in men aged 65 or older, and it is rare before age 40. The average age at the time of diagnosis is about 66.

DEATHS FROM PROSTATE CANCER

Prostate cancer is the third leading cause of cancer death in American men, behind lung cancer and colorectal cancer. About 1 man in 39 will die of prostate cancer.

Prostate cancer can be a serious disease, but most men diagnosed with prostate cancer do not die from it. In fact, more than 2.9 million men in the United States who have been diagnosed with prostate cancer at some point are still alive today.

WHAT'S IT LIKE NOT TO HAVE A BED TO SLEEP ON?How can a child be alert for school and other activities when they don't have a good night's rest? BEDDING FOR KIDSWe need your help to collect 60 twin-size "Bedding in a Bag" children's bedding sets by May 30, 2019. Various organizations are providing more than 15 beds and bedding sets to at-risk children every week.  These go for children in the foster care system, transitioning from being homeless, and for other children living in poverty.  Together we can provide some of these needed bedding sets for our kids!  These new sets (including bedspread, sheets and pillow case) are available at Kohl's, Walmart, Burlington and other stores, both in-store and online. Standard pricing starts around $40.00-$50.00, but some can be found on sale, clearance or through special promotions for less than $35.00. Checks of any amount can be made out to FCC with "Bedding for foster kids" in memo. Medication Take Back Event

The Coalition for Urban Youth and Family Development has partnered with The Northwest Activities Center, OPEN Michigan, the DEA, and the Detroit Police Department to collect unused medications. We can protect children form accidental poisoning by disposing of unused and expired medications.

As we know from previous research, many people will not dispose of their medications otherwise, increasing the potential that they are diverted into our community and waterways. Increasing safe and convenient opportunities for community members to dispose of their unused and leftover medications is essential for preventing opioid abuse before it begins. Take back events are a great opportunity for community organizations and passionate individuals to come together to make a difference in their local community.

We need your help to collect 60 twin-size "Bedding in a Bag" children's bedding sets by May 30, 2019. These complete 5-piece sets are available at Kohl's, Walmart, Burlington and other stores, (both in-store and online), with standard pricing for some between $29.00 and $35.00 per set, and with occasional clearance or promotional pricing. These can be dropped off at our local FCC regional meetings or at our Faith Communities Coalition on Foster Care office at First Presbyterian Church, 1669 West Maple Road, Birmingham.

We are thrilled to have Missy Miller-Parker with us. She will be sharing the story of the journey she has shared with her adopted son who had been held captive in an attic for years. He suffered unimaginable abuse for five years until his mother and boyfriend were discovered and arrested. The police were able to track down his biological father who had just married Missy. Missy and his father focused on learning how to help him heal, get an education and learn of God's love for him.  His story RESILIENCY and HOPE was featured on WXYZ News on August 3, 2017.  You can read this amazing story on line and hear what it was like for Missy in person at this meeting. The Honorable Frank Szymanski, Juvenile Court of the Third Circuit Court explains a new model to work together to support children and families at risk:

"The 3rd Circuit Court Juvenile Division is flooded with traumatized children and families facing extreme challenges brought on by poverty, mental health issues, domestic violence and substance abuse on a daily basis. Repeated traumatic events make the concept of a "normal" childhood impossible for children in these families and research indicates that experiencing these events in childhood leads to increased rates of teen pregnancy, substance abuse, illiteracy, chronic absenteeism and school dropouts, which in turn leads to higher rates of crime, poverty and homelessness, the ultimate plagues to our communities.

The Juvenile Division handles cases of parental neglect and abuse, and juvenile crime. While there are Department of Health and Human Services caseworkers, and probation officers, assigned to provide assistance and guidance in these cases, but they can only do so much and much more needs to be done to give these children and families a fighting chance. The best way to help these families is to be face to face in the neighborhoods where they live. To that end the Juvenile Division Judicial Engagement Team led by Judge Frank Szymanski and Deputy Court Administrator Richard Smart is working to develop a network to allow volunteers to help in cases where a family needs assistance with moving, or clothing, or furniture, or housing, or other needs. Mentors for youth and parents can be especially helpful because many of these cases are the result of generational neglect. It can make a world of difference to these families to know there is someone nearby who cares and is willing to help."

SURVIVORS DAY 2018

Survivor Day is the one day a year when people affected by suicide loss gather around the world at events in their local communities to find comfort and gain understanding as they share stories of healing and hope.

On Saturday, November 17, 2018, loss survivors will gather around the globe in small and large events while growing together in their grief journey.

Each event is unique and offers various programming, however each event site will feature an AFSP produced documentary that offers a message of growth, resilience and connection.

The Empowerment Zone Coalition (EZC) and The Coalition for Urban Youth and Family Development invites you to the "Collective Call to Action" 2018 Substance Abuse Summit. This year's primary focus is to explore drugs and drug-related issues that impact youth. We will discuss and formulate solutions that may be used across all sectors of the community. The Summit will challenge those in attendance to embrace a multiple-strategy approach and utilize information to become actively involved in changing social norms to create drug-free, healthy and safe communities. The Summit also will include dynamite keynote speaker, guest speakers, breakout workshops, continental breakfast, lunch, pending continuing education units (CEUs). A special contribution from The Center for Urban Youth and Family Development will include a presentation by our program director Marseille Arbuckle, Jr. discussing Suicide and Substance Abuse.

The National Prescription Drug Take Back Day addresses a crucial public safety and public health issue.
